- Shaaban moon sighting decision delays Ramzan calendar
- Shaaban moon update clarifies Islamic calendar timeline
The Shaaban moon was not sighted in Saudi Arabia, delaying the start of the eighth month of the Islamic calendar and pushing back clarity on the beginning of Ramzan 2026. The crescent moon, which marks the start of Shaaban 1447 AH, was not visible on Sunday, January 18, according to official observations in the Kingdom. As a result, authorities confirmed that Monday, January 19, will be observed as the final day of Rajab, the seventh month of the Islamic lunar calendar.
Saudi Arabia’s official moon sighting committees carried out observations at several designated observatories across the country. However, despite clear and careful efforts, the committees reported that the crescent could not be seen. Therefore, the lunar month of Shaaban did not begin as expected. This announcement followed established procedures that rely on direct moon sighting rather than prediction alone.
Shaaban holds religious importance for Muslims, as it serves as a period of spiritual preparation before Ramzan. During this month, believers often increase prayers and reflection in anticipation of the fasting period. However, the delay in the Shaaban moon sighting has also postponed certainty about the exact start of Ramzan 2026.
Based on astronomical calculations, Ramzan in 2026 is expected to begin in mid February. However, Saudi authorities have clarified that the official start date will only be announced closer to the time. This confirmation will again depend on moon sighting, in line with the Kingdom’s long followed tradition. Therefore, any dates mentioned at this stage remain tentative.
Meanwhile, Ramzan is recognised as the ninth and holiest month in Islam. It commemorates the revelation of the Holy Quran to Prophet Muhammad. During Ramzan, Muslims fast from dawn to dusk and abstain from food, drink, and other physical needs. They also focus on prayer, charity, self discipline, and spiritual growth throughout the month.
The Shaaban moon announcement from Saudi Arabia is closely followed by Muslims worldwide. Many countries often align their Islamic calendar dates with the Kingdom. Therefore, the confirmation that the Shaaban moon was not seen has regional and global relevance. Further updates are expected as the next moon sighting approaches, bringing clarity on the official start of Ramzan 2026.
