SIR To Commence In 12 states From Nov 4
- CEC Gyanesh Kumar announces second phase of SIR covering 51 crore voters
- Draft voter list to be released on December 9; final list on February 7
Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar announced that the second phase of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) will commence in 12 states and Union Territories from November 4.
The process will cover a total of 51 crore voters. The SIR, a comprehensive voter roll verification and correction drive, is being undertaken to ensure accurate, updated, and transparent electoral records.
According to Gyanesh Kumar, this phase of the SIR will include Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Chhattisgarh, Goa, Gujarat, Kerala, Lakshadweep, Madhya Pradesh, Puducherry, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal. He said the draft voters list will be published on December 9, and the final list is expected to be released on February 7.
The Chief Election Commissioner explained that the SIR has become essential due to various issues such as voter migration, duplication, forgery, and the removal of names of deceased voters since the last major revision in 2002. The ongoing exercise marks the ninth revision since the launch of the SIR. Gyanesh Kumar emphasized that the process will help strengthen electoral transparency and integrity across all states and union territories involved.
He also clarified that while Aadhaar cards can be used as a valid identity document during the SIR process, they do not serve as proof of citizenship.
This clarification comes amid ongoing discussions about the use of Aadhaar for voter verification. The CEC further stated that the voter list revision process in Assam will be carried out separately, given the state’s unique circumstances.
The Election Commission aims to complete this phase of the revision ahead of the upcoming electoral cycle to ensure that every eligible citizen’s name is properly registered and all inaccuracies are removed. The large-scale exercise demonstrates the Commission’s commitment to maintaining a reliable and tamper-free electoral roll nationwide.
