Six BRS MLCs Shock the Party and Join Congress in Hyderabad
BRS MLCs Shock | Hyderabad, July 5: In a significant development, six members of the Bharat Rashtra Samiti (BRS) Legislative Council to the Congress late Thursday, in the presence of Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy.
They include Dande Vittal, Bhanu Prasad, B. Dayanand, Prabhakar Rao, Egge Mallesham, and Basavaraju Saraiah.
The late-night switch was driven by the MLCs’ insistence on joining before the start of Amavasya, which began today. However, the formal induction had to wait until midnight due to the late arrival of the Chief Minister from New Delhi.
This move bolsters the Congress party’s representation in the Council to 12 members, up from the existing six.
BRS MLCs Shock
Consequently, the BRS’s strength in the Council has dropped to 21. The newly joined MLCs hail from diverse constituencies: Dande Vittal from Adilabad Local Body elections, Bhanu Prasad from Karimnagar Local Bodies, MS Prabhakar from Ranga Reddy local bodies, Yegge Mallesh from the MLAs quota, and Boggavarapu Dayanand and Basavaraju Saraiah from the Governor’s quota.
Interestingly, many of these MLCs originally belonged to Congress before switching to the BRS during its tenure in power. Additionally, two more BRS MLCs, Kuchukulla Damodar Reddy and Patnam Mahender Reddy (a former Minister in BRS’s second term), have been aligning with the Congress for some time.
There is speculation that Council Chairman Gutha Sukhender Reddy may also defect to the Congress, as he has been critical of the BRS for a while. His son, Amit Reddy, joined the Congress before the parliamentary elections after being denied a BRS ticket. Gutha Sukhender Reddy, initially elected as an MP from the Congress, joined the BRS, completed his term, and then was elected as a BRS MLC and made Council Chairman.

This wave of defections follows the exit of BRS senior leader and Rajya Sabha member K. Keshava Rao, who joined the Congress in the presence of AICC President Mallikarjun Kharge and others. Rao subsequently resigned as an MP by submitting his resignation to Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankar. Over the past few months, six BRS MLAs have also defected to the Congress.
