The move aims to remove fake voters and clean up the electoral rolls across the country.

In recent years, concerns have grown over duplicate and ineligible names in voter lists. Therefore, the Commission plans to carry out a detailed verification process.

Preparations for the exercise have already begun in Telangana. The state’s Chief Electoral Officer, C. Sudarshan Reddy, has started training programmes for election officials.

According to officials, the revision process will begin in April. Field-level work is expected to speed up by May 2026.

Meanwhile, officials have already started mapping voter data from 2002 with the current electoral rolls.

Usually, the Election Commission conducts a summary revision every year.

That process mainly includes minor changes such as adding new voters or updating details.

However, the Special Intensive Revision is a much deeper and more detailed exercise.

During this process, Booth Level Officers (BLOs) will visit every household to verify voter details. In addition, modern technology will also be used.

Tools such as AI and deduplication software will help identify duplicate voter entries in different locations.

The exercise will also help update voter records for people who have shifted residences due to urbanisation.

Last year, the Election Commission conducted a pilot SIR project in Bihar before the Assembly elections. Later, the second phase was carried out in 12 states and Union Territories.

The final voter lists for those areas were released in February. (Maxim News)
