Spider-Man: Brand New Day Sets Biggest Hollywood Opening In India

Internet, August 1: Spider-Man: Brand New Day has created history at the Indian box office by recording the biggest opening day ever for a Hollywood film, collecting an estimated ₹73 crore gross on its first day in India.

The latest Spider-Man blockbuster surpassed Avengers: Endgame, which had held the record since 2019 with a ₹65 crore opening. The achievement further strengthens the Spider-Man franchise’s dominance in the Indian market.

Spider-Man franchise dominates Indian box office

According to trade estimates, this is the sixth time a standalone Spider-Man film has delivered the biggest Hollywood opening in India since the release of the original Spider-Man (2002). Including Spider-Man’s appearances in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, the character has now been associated with eight record breaking Hollywood openings in the country.

Before the rise of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), the Spider-Man franchise was regarded as Hollywood’s biggest draw among Indian audiences. The Avengers films later took over that position, with Infinity War collecting ₹41 crore on its opening day before Endgame raised the benchmark to ₹65 crore.

Apart from superhero films, only a handful of Hollywood releases have topped India’s opening day record over the past two decades, including King Kong, Casino Royale, 2012, and Furious 7.

With Avengers: Doomsday expected to release later this year, industry analysts believe the record could face another challenge.
