Supreme Court Declines Urgent Hearing On Plea Against Police Action During CJP Protest

New Delhi, July 22: The Supreme Court on Wednesday declined a request for the urgent listing of a petition challenging the police action against students during the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) led protest march in New Delhi.

The request was mentioned before a bench comprising Chief Justice of India Surya Kant and Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V Mohan.

Supreme Court Declines Urgent Hearing

During the mentioning, the petitioner’s counsel sought an urgent hearing and referred to alleged police brutality against students. The lawyer also said the petition was supported by video evidence and requested that the matter be listed on Thursday.

Responding to the request, the Chief Justice said the bench was not inclined to examine video footage at the mentioning stage.

“We are not interested in videos. We do not have time to watch them,” the Chief Justice observed. When the counsel again referred to the videos, the bench declined the request for an urgent listing.

The petition relates to the police action during the CJP protest march to Parliament on Monday, the opening day of the Monsoon Session.

Thousands of students and young protesters had gathered in the national capital demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over alleged examination irregularities.

The protest witnessed clashes between demonstrators and security personnel after protesters attempted to march towards Parliament. Police used lathis and tear gas to disperse the crowd.
