Hyderabad, Oct. 15: The Supreme Court on Thursday issued notices to the Election Commission of India (ECI) and Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
A bench comprising Chief Justice of India Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi sought responses from the poll panel, Kumar and Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi. The petition was filed by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and other Opposition leaders challenging alleged voter deletions and irregularities during the SIR exercise.
The court also addressed separate petitions concerning the Opposition march towards the Supreme Court on October 12 and the removal of Jantar Mantar from Delhi’s designated protest sites.
Supreme Court Seeks Responses on SIR and Protest Restrictions
In a separate proceeding, the Supreme Court issued notices to Rahul Gandhi, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav and others over their participation in the October 12 march. The bench observed that nobody could browbeat the judiciary.
The court also directed law enforcement agencies to preserve CCTV footage related to the incident, including footage from the Supreme Court premises. The notices seek responses and do not amount to findings of wrongdoing.

Meanwhile, the court issued notices to the Union government and Delhi Police over a petition challenging the removal of Jantar Mantar from the list of designated protest sites.

The petition challenged the decision after authorities removed the historic location from the list. The court asked the Centre and Delhi Police to submit their responses.
The dispute arose after the CJP sought permission to protest at Jantar Mantar, demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The organisation challenged the removal of the site through a petition.
The proceedings concern separate issues: alleged electoral-roll irregularities, the Opposition march and restrictions on designated protest venues. The Supreme Court has sought responses from the concerned parties, and the allegations remain subject to judicial consideration.
