Supreme Court raps Tamil Nadu government for backing protests
The Supreme Court on Tuesday slammed the Tamil Nadu government for not maintaining law and order during the protests that were held in support of the bull-taming sport Jallikattu. The Court ordered no stay on Tamil Nadu’s law allowing Jallikatu and issued notice to Tamil Nadu and sought the state’s response on the new law.
The Apex Court today heard several pleas regarding Jallikattu, on Tuesday, including a crucial one by the Animal Welfare board of India (AWBI) seeking the state government law on the sport to be declared invalid.
As per report by ANI, the plea by the AWBI termed the amendment a ‘fraud’ on the Constitution and a violation of a 2014 Supreme Court judgment, which had declared Jallikattu as an inherently cruel event practiced on bulls. It described Jallikattu as an “extremely violent” event where untrained people are coerced into taming or fighting terrified bulls, agitated by the organisers and the crowd.
