New Delhi, Sept. 8: The Supreme Court on Monday expressed concern over attacks on doctors and hospital staff by political workers in Maharashtra.
The court said such incidents cannot be taken lightly. It also stressed that those involved should be arrested immediately and not allowed to move freely.
The remarks came during the hearing of a petition filed by Shiv Sena corporator Ramesh Sukriya Matre. He was arrested on July 6 for allegedly attacking doctors and staff at KDMC Shastri Nagar Hospital in Dombivli, Thane.
Matre had challenged conditions imposed by the Bombay High Court while granting him bail. One condition directed him not to reside in Maharashtra. He sought permission to visit Mumbai.

The bench referred to a recent incident in Palghar, where Shiv Sena workers allegedly slapped a hospital receptionist and threatened a female employee.
Justice Vikram Nath said the situation was deteriorating with increasing attacks on doctors. He stressed the need for a strong message to society against such incidents.
Senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi, appearing for Matre, told the court that he would withdraw the appeal following the bench’s observations.
Rohatgi also said the High Court had directed the filing of a charge sheet within 10 days. He added that the accused would face punishment if found guilty.
The Supreme Court indicated that it would hear the Maharashtra government’s appeal against the Bombay High Court order granting bail to Matre. (Maxim News)
