Hyderabad: Tarique Rahman becomes the Prime Minister of Bangladesh after 17 years in exile, following a landslide victory by the Bangladesh National Party in the recent elections. He returned to Bangladesh in December last year after living in Britain. Now, within days of his return, he is set to take charge as Prime Minister.
The Bangladesh National Party secured a landslide victory in the elections held in Bangladesh. As a result, Tarique Rahman will be elected as the Prime Minister of this party. He participated in the elections held on Thursday and won. He led his party to victory. After almost 20 years, the BNP came to power.
Tarique Rahman is the son of former Bangladesh Prime Minister Khaleda Zia. During her tenure from 2002 to 2006, Rahman was accused of corruption and played a key role in the government. After his mother’s government collapsed, the then government arrested him in 2007 on corruption charges. He remained in jail for 17 months. Later, he went to Britain after being exiled.
He returned to Bangladesh in December last year after 17 years, following his mother’s death. On that occasion, he received a grand welcome. He took the reins of the party after his mother’s death. He, who is called the Dark Prince, acted as the shadow PM when his mother was the Prime Minister.
Meanwhile, attention has shifted to his attitude towards India. In the past, the BNP adopted an anti India stance. It took many steps against India when his mother was the Prime Minister. There are allegations that she gave shelter to anti India forces. Differences existed between the two countries on trade, commercial issues and water disputes.
However, how the party acts now is crucial. Analysts expect Tarique to act differently. He adopted a new slogan, “Integrated Bangladesh.” He said he will deal with no one without hostility. Therefore, observers expect fewer differences with India.
India and Bangladesh share a border of nearly 4,000 kilometers. Both countries need to work together on border security, peace and security, trade and commerce, and the safety of Hindus in Bangladesh.
