- GHMC Expansion linked to new DISCOM, solar plans and power reforms
Hyderabad: GHMC Expansion received formal approval from the Telangana Cabinet on Monday after detailed discussions led by Chief Minister Revanth Reddy. The meeting lasted more than four hours and covered major decisions on urban governance, electricity reforms and land allocation. Minister Sridhar Babu later explained the key resolutions to the media and said the decision to merge 27 surrounding municipalities into GHMC marked an important shift in the state’s urban planning.
He said the municipalities of Pedda Amberpet, Jalpally, Shamshabad, Turkayamjal, Manikonda, Narsingi, Adibhatla, Medchal, Nagaram, Dammaiguda, Pocharam, Ghatkesar, Gandlapochampally, Thoonkunta, Kompally, Dundigal, Bollaram, Tellapur, Aminpur, Badangpet, Bandlaguda Jagir, Mirpet, Boduppal, Nizampet, Firzadiguda and Jawaharnagar will be merged with GHMC. He added that the Cabinet took the decision to improve coordination and service delivery in the Greater Hyderabad region. The move will reshape the administrative map around the Outer Ring Road and will bring key suburbs under a single civic body.
Meanwhile, the Cabinet also approved the creation of a new electricity distribution company. Sridhar Babu said the new DISCOM will handle lift irrigation connections, Hyderabad Metro Water Supply, agricultural connections and Mission Bhagiratha connections. He said the state discussed the steps needed to meet power demand over the next ten years. Therefore, the Cabinet approved the plan to purchase 3,000 megawatts of solar power and said that tenders will open soon.
The minister also said the government will purchase 2,000 megawatts of pumped storage electricity and will invite investments in that sector. He explained that new industries will be allowed to generate their own electricity. He said the state will proceed with the construction of an 800 MW plant in Ramagundam under NTPC. He also said the government will study the option of new plants in Palvancha and Maktal. Later, the Cabinet decided to divide Hyderabad into three circles and establish an underground electricity cable system. This system will include fiber optic cables and underground power lines.
He said the Cabinet also approved land allocations for education and sports. They allotted 20 acres for the Young India School in Pedda Nallavelli in Dummugudem mandal of Bhadradri district. They also allotted 40 acres for a sports school in Jaggayyapet in Mulugu district. He added that the state will establish more advanced training institutes along with one planned in Jubilee Hills.
The series of decisions formed one of the most detailed Cabinet sessions in recent months. The focus on GHMC Expansion and power reforms showed the government’s plans to reorganize urban bodies and increase energy production. The allocation of land for schools and training institutes also reflected the state’s interest in long term development.
