Hyderabad: Telangana Agriculture Minister Tummala Nageswara Rao on Saturday urged farmers to opt for dry season and less water-intensive crops, warning that the expected impact of El Niño could reduce rainfall and create water scarcity across the state.
Speaking at a review meeting in Karimnagar, the minister said the state could face challenges in meeting both irrigation and drinking water needs if rainfall remains below normal.
Tummala Nageswara Rao Urges Water-Efficient Farming
The minister said the current water levels in irrigation projects do not permit unrestricted release of irrigation water and advised farmers to plan cultivation based on water availability.
He urged farmers to shift towards crops that require less water to minimise losses during the season.
Tummala also directed officials from the Agriculture, Irrigation, Rural Development and Drinking Water Supply departments to work in close coordination to tackle the anticipated impact of El Niño.
He instructed officials to prepare a comprehensive action plan to ensure adequate drinking water supply and the efficient use of available irrigation resources.
The minister stressed that advance planning and timely action would help protect both farmers and the public from the adverse effects of a possible drought-like situation.
He added that authorities have been instructed to continuously monitor weather conditions and take necessary measures based on changing forecasts.
