Telangana Govt. Extends Rs. 500 LPG Scheme To Five Lakh More Benefits

Hyderabad, Aug 8 (Maxim News): Telangana Civil Supplies Department has prepared plans to expand the ‘Mahalakshmi’ scheme—part of the state government’s ‘Six Guarantees’—which provides gas cylinders for ₹500. Currently, 42.90 lakh families across the state are benefiting from this scheme. The department has now identified over five lakh additional families as eligible and has submitted the list for government approval. Once the proposal, currently under review by the Finance Department, is approved, these new beneficiaries will receive the subsidy.

A notification for the scheme was issued in February 2024, drawing applications from 91.49 lakh people across the state; of these, 42.90 lakh were deemed eligible and are receiving the subsidy on gas cylinders.

The government allocates ₹723.30 crore annually in the budget for this purpose. The subsidized gas scheme is implemented exclusively for ration card holders. There are over 1.20 crore gas connections in the state; however, some holders reside abroad or in other states, and a significant number of households have gas connections registered in the names of both the husband and wife. Many individuals who were otherwise eligible could not avail themselves of the scheme because they did not possess separate ration cards—an issue particularly affecting newlywed couples.
