Telangana Govt. Releases Rs. 205 Crore for Warangal Airport Land Acquisition to Boost Regional Connectivity
Hyderabad, July 25 (Maxim News): In a significant move to accelerate the revival of Warangal’s Mamnoor Airport, the Telangana government has sanctioned ₹205 crore for land acquisition to facilitate airport expansion and development. The official order, dated July 23, was issued by the Telangana Roads and Buildings Department, marking a crucial step toward enhancing regional air connectivity.
This financial allocation will be used to acquire 253 acres of land necessary for the modernisation and expansion of the Mamnoor Airport, with the goal of transforming Warangal into a key regional hub, comparable to Hyderabad in terms of infrastructure and connectivity.
Centre Approves Warangal Airport Revival
Earlier in February 2025, the Centre gave its approval for the development and operationalisation of Mamnoor Airport. A major roadblock was cleared after the Hyderabad International Airport Limited (HIAL) issued a No Objection Certificate (NOC), waiving the exclusivity clause that had restricted the establishment of new airports within a 150-km radius of the Hyderabad International Airport.
Previously, under the Concession Agreement between the Government of India and HIAL, no new airports—domestic or international—were permitted within a 150-km aerial radius of Hyderabad for 25 years. However, HIAL’s Board of Directors granted a one-time waiver specifically for the Mamnoor project. The waiver, it clarified, will not apply to any future airport projects by the Airports Authority of India (AAI) or the Telangana government.
Planned Infrastructure Upgrades at Mamnoor Airport
With the newly released funds, the Telangana government plans to carry out several critical upgrades at Mamnoor Airport, including:
- Extending the runway from 1.8 km to 3.9 km to support wide-body aircraft like the Boeing 747
- Constructing a modern passenger terminal
- Setting up a new Air Traffic Control (ATC) tower
- Installing advanced navigational and security equipment
These upgrades aim to meet international aviation standards, facilitating both passenger and cargo operations.
Economic and Strategic Impact
Officials believe that reviving Mamnoor Airport will position Warangal as a new growth engine for Telangana by:
- Attracting industrial and business investments
- Creating employment opportunities
- Boosting trade, tourism, and connectivity across North Telangana
Given Warangal’s historic and cultural significance, improved air connectivity is expected to enhance the district’s appeal as a tourism and commercial hub, contributing to the broader development goals of the state.
