Telangana To Rename Raj Bhavan As Lok Bhavan After MHA Directive
Hyderabad: Telangana will rename Raj Bhavan as Lok Bhavan after a directive issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs.
The Centre sent a formal communication to all states and union territories on November twenty fifth.
The letter said the term Raj Bhavan carried a colonial tone. It instructed states to adopt the name Lok Bhavan for the Governor’s residence.
It also directed that ‘Raj Niwas’ be renamed ‘Lok Niwas’ for the offices of Lieutenant Governors. Moreover, it said the recommendation came from the 2024 Conference of Governors.
The Ministry said all official documents must use the new names. It explained that the change would remove colonial influence.
Furthermore, it said the updated titles aimed to reflect public centric governance. Officials said the circular reached all principal secretaries attached to state Governors.
They also said the states must update records soon. The ministry asked departments to start using the new titles without delay.
Centre Moves to End Colonial Naming in Governor Offices
The letter, signed by Joint Secretary Gurrala Parthasarathi, outlined the reasoning behind the shift.
It said Raj Bhavan no longer suited India’s democratic spirit. It also said the change aligned with modern administrative values.
Moreover, it said states should treat the directive as mandatory for all official purposes.
The communication also reached the President’s Secretariat, the Prime Minister’s Office, and senior officials in the Home Ministry.
Telangana officials began internal discussions soon after receiving the letter.
They said the state would follow the directive. They also said updates would start once formal state orders were issued.
Moreover, they said the name change applied only to official usage and not to administrative structure. They added that signage, stationery, and digital portals would be updated.
Political observers noted that the move matched earlier efforts to replace colonial era terms. They said states might also rename related establishments.
Furthermore, they said the directive could trigger debate on similar institutional names. Officials said the transition would occur in phases. They added that public notices would be issued when updates became official.
The Ministry asked states to treat the renaming as a national standard.
It said consistency would help administrative clarity. Moreover, it said the change represented a symbolic shift. It added that the government aimed to reflect inclusive governance through new nomenclature.
