Telangana voter list revision | Hyderabad, June 25: Telangana has begun the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls from June 25, with officials set to remove duplicate entries, add new voters and update details before publishing the final voter list on October 1.
The exercise has gained political attention as Telangana currently has around 3.38 crore voters and the final number after revision is expected to change. Enumeration forms have already been printed and sent to districts, while Booth Level Officers will distribute them door to door from June 25 to July 24.
Political parties have also stepped up their preparations, especially after similar voter list revision exercises in Bihar and West Bengal triggered concerns and scrutiny.
What voters should know about Telangana voter list revision
Officials said voters do not need to submit any documents while collecting or returning the enumeration forms during the house to house survey. Family members can also fill and submit the forms on behalf of voters who are away for jobs, business, studies or overseas work.
This is expected to help a large number of Telangana residents who are working in Gulf countries or living in other states and cities. Voters will be given two copies of the enumeration form, and they have been advised to keep one copy after obtaining the BLO’s signature as proof of submission.
Election officials clarified that errors in names, spelling, age or differences between old and present names will not automatically lead to deletion of votes. Such issues will be taken up during the claims and objections stage starting July 31, and voters can submit supporting documents to correct the details.
The Election Commission said the present software can identify duplicate voters only within the same state. It cannot currently detect if the same person is registered as a voter in two different states. Officials said nearly five lakh duplicate entries within Telangana have already been identified in the past, and after taking the voter’s option, only one vote was retained while the rest were removed.
This issue is considered significant in Hyderabad and other urban centres, where many people from other states have shifted for employment, business and education. Since there is no system to automatically detect inter state duplicate voter registrations, some names may continue in two states unless identified separately.
The ongoing revision also opens the door for fresh voter enrolment. New voters can apply by filling the required application form and submitting supporting documents when the BLO visits their home. Those staying in other places can also apply online through the Election Commission of India website using Aadhaar OTP.
However, officials pointed out that online enrolment may not work if the name on Aadhaar does not match the name in voter records. In such cases, applicants may have to resolve the mismatch during the verification process.
The Election Commission is also preparing to take legal action against people who provide false information during the Special Intensive Revision. If the same person submits enumeration forms in two different places, cases may be booked against them. Officials believe strict action against a few violators will help deter others from submitting false declarations.
The draft electoral roll will be published on July 31. Claims and objections can be filed from July 31 to August 30, while notices related to corrections and verification will be issued up to September 28. The final electoral roll will be published on October 1.
