Ujjain, Sept. 28: Tension escalated in parts of Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, on Monday following protests against the proposed partial demolition of the historic Shahi Masjid. Stone pelting was reported, prompting police to use tear gas to disperse protesters.
Heavy police deployment continued around the mosque as authorities prepared for road widening ahead of Simhastha 2028. The proposed project covers an approximately 900 metre stretch between Kanthal Square and Gopal Mandir.

Authorities plan to widen the road to 15 metres to accommodate the expected influx of pilgrims during Simhastha 2028. Around 60 religious and other structures fall along the project route, most of which have reportedly been cleared.
However, the Shahi Masjid and a nearby mazar near Khade Hanuman Mandir have become focal points of opposition.

The proposed demolition would affect portions of the mosque’s prayer hall, a minaret and adjoining structures. Community members describe the mosque as a centuries-old Waqf property, with some accounts dating it to around 1390.
The Madhya Pradesh High Court at Indore had earlier dismissed petitions challenging the municipal corporation’s demolition notices, citing public interest and traffic requirements. A further hearing in the matter was scheduled for Monday.
