New Delhi / Hyderabad, Sept. 27 (Maxim News) : TRAI 30 Days Recharge Plans are set to give prepaid mobile users more flexibility under new telecom consumer protection rules. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India released the Telecom Consumers Protection (13th Amendment) Regulations, 2026, on September 22.
The new regulations require telecom service providers to offer special tariff vouchers exclusively for voice and SMS services. These vouchers must include validity options of 30 days or less.
The rules also require operators to provide a monthly renewable option. The renewal must take place on the same date every month. If that date does not exist in a particular month, the renewal will take place on the last day of that month.
The new framework will benefit users who do not need mobile data. Such customers can choose voice and SMS plans instead of paying for bundled data services.
The regulations also require operators to offer at least one voice and SMS only voucher with a validity longer than the shorter validity options. This expands the range of recharge choices available to prepaid customers.
TRAI 30 Days Recharge Plans to expand consumer choices
The TRAI 30 Days Recharge Plans rules address concerns about limited validity options for prepaid users. In particular, consumers who mainly use their phones for calls and messages can choose plans that better match their usage.
Rajya Sabha MP Raghav Chadha said on X that the new rules would provide consumers with more recharge options and greater convenience. He also said consumers could avoid the need for an additional recharge caused by shorter validity cycles.
Chadha said he had raised the issue in Parliament on March 11. He had sought more affordable and flexible recharge options for telecom users.
However, the new rules do not mean that every operator must immediately launch an identical 30 day plan. Instead, TRAI has prescribed the types of voice and SMS only vouchers that service providers must offer.
The regulations will come into force after 30 days from their publication in the Official Gazette.
Therefore, customers should check their respective telecom operator’s recharge options after the new rules take effect. Prices and specific plan benefits may differ between operators.
The move particularly targets users who have little or no need for mobile data. It also gives operators a regulatory framework for offering shorter and monthly renewable voice and SMS vouchers.
Meanwhile, TRAI continues to strengthen its consumer protection framework. The regulator has listed the 13th Amendment among its latest telecom regulations.
For prepaid users, the key change is the availability of more flexible voice and SMS recharge options. The new framework could make monthly recharging simpler for customers who prefer non-data plans. (Maxim News)
