Umar Khalid | Hyderabad, Oct. 8: JNU student activist Umar Khalid has been named the Asia and Pacific recipient of the 2026 Front Line Defenders Award for Human Rights Defenders at Risk.
The award was presented at a ceremony at Trinity College Dublin on Thursday. Khalid could not attend because he remains in Tihar Jail, where he has been held without trial since September 2020.
Front Line Defenders recognised Khalid for his activism involving students, minorities and citizens. The organisation said his continued imprisonment has become part of a wider pattern affecting human rights defenders, journalists and students exercising rights to peaceful assembly and free expression.
Umar Khalid Among Five Global Laureates
Khalid was arrested under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act in connection with the February 2020 communal violence in northeast Delhi. He has remained in custody while his trial has not yet begun.
Delhi Police have accused Khalid of involvement in a larger conspiracy linked to the 2020 violence. Khalid and his supporters have denied the allegations.
Front Line Defenders said several international human rights organisations and the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention have raised concerns over his arrest and detention.
The 2026 award has five regional laureates. They include Ahmadreza Haeri of Iran, Laurinda Manuel Gouveia of Angola, Adda Vyctoria Caetano of Brazil and Ljiljana Nešić of Serbia.
The annual award, established in 2005, recognises human rights defenders who make significant contributions to protecting human rights, often while facing serious personal risks.
