US H1B Visa Fraud | The United States has intensified its crackdown on alleged misuse of the H-1B visa programme by launching a comprehensive investigation into fraud and irregularities in the application process. The move has raised concerns among Indian IT professionals, who form a significant share of H-1B visa holders and applicants.
The investigation is being conducted by the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), which said it is examining suspected abuses of the H-1B lottery system and violations of immigration rules by companies and consulting firms.
US H1B Visa Fraud | US Prioritises Jobs for American Workers
Speaking on the issue, US Vice President JD Vance said employment opportunities in the country should primarily benefit American citizens. He warned that companies exploiting loopholes in the H-1B visa programme to hire foreign workers at lower wages would face strict action.
Vance also stated that the administration would not tolerate companies using fake documentation or fraudulent practices to secure H-1B visas. He said authorities are committed to closing loopholes in the system and ensuring that employers comply with immigration laws.
USCIS Investigating Multiple Applications
According to USCIS, preliminary findings indicate that some companies submitted multiple H-1B registrations for the same candidate to improve their chances in the annual lottery system. Such practices violate programme rules and undermine the fairness of the selection process.
Officials said the investigation would identify companies and consultancies involved in fraudulent activities and examine whether they intentionally manipulated the visa process.
Indian IT Professionals Closely Watching Developments
The latest enforcement drive has created uncertainty among Indian technology professionals planning to work in the United States. Industry observers believe companies found violating H-1B regulations could face heavy financial penalties, cancellation of approved visas, and other legal consequences.
Although the probe is aimed at fraudulent employers rather than genuine applicants, immigration experts advise candidates to ensure that their applications are filed through legitimate employers and comply fully with USCIS regulations.
The H-1B visa remains one of the most sought-after work visas for highly skilled foreign professionals, particularly those employed in the information technology sector.
