- US jet rescue in Iran follows F-15E Strike Eagle incident
- Donald Trump confirms colonel rescued in military operation
US President Donald Trump on Sunday said the second crew member of a US jet shot down by Iran has been rescued in a military operation deep inside the country. He announced the development in a post on Truth Social, stating, “We got him” and adding, “I am thrilled to let you know it is now safe and sound!”
The rescued officer, described as a “highly respected colonel”, was part of the crew of an F-15E Strike Eagle that Iran brought down on Friday. Both crew members had ejected from the aircraft during the mission over Iran. Meanwhile, the pilot was rescued shortly after in a search and rescue mission, while efforts continued to locate the colonel.
However, the operation to rescue the second crew member involved extensive military deployment. Trump said the US Military sent dozens of aircraft equipped with advanced weapons to retrieve him from “behind enemy lines in the treacherous mountains of Iran”. He also said the officer sustained injuries but would recover.
According to the details, US aircraft intensified attacks on targets within Iran before the rescue. On Thursday, they destroyed a major bridge described as a key gateway to Tehran. Reports also said Iran had placed a bounty on the colonel, raising concerns that his capture could become a bargaining point.
Meanwhile, Trump issued a warning to Iran during the search operation. In another post, he said, “Remember when I gave Iran ten days to make a deal or open up the Hormuz Strait. Time is running out — 48 hours before all Hell will reign down on them. Glory be to God”. His remarks highlighted rising tensions during the ongoing situation.
He further stated that the success of the operation showed US strength. “The fact that we were able to pull off both of these operations, without a single American killed, or even wounded, just proves once again, that we have achieved overwhelming Air Dominance and Superiority over the Iranian skies”, he said.
Additionally, media reports indicated that another US aircraft, an A-10 Warthog, may have been hit by Iranian fire and crashed near the Strait of Hormuz on Friday. However, the pilot was rescued after landing outside Iranian territory.
US sources cited in reports said aircraft dropped bombs on Iranian forces moving toward the colonel during the rescue. A firefight also took place, according to these accounts. Reports also noted that a helicopter used earlier was damaged by Iranian fire but managed to exit safely.
Officials said troops had entered Iran to conduct the rescue mission, supported by helicopters and other aircraft. Air crew were able to use beacons and communication devices to assist in their location and recovery.
