Washington, July 21: The United States carried out another round of military strikes against Iranian targets near the Strait of Hormuz, targeting command centres, missile and drone launch sites, maritime capabilities, and air defence systems, according to the US Central Command (CENTCOM).
CENTCOM said the operation was conducted at 9 p.m. ET on July 20 to reduce Iran’s ability to attack commercial vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz.
In a statement posted on X, CENTCOM said the strikes targeted Iranian military infrastructure linked to maritime threats. It added that around 900 commercial vessels carrying nearly 450 million barrels of crude oil have safely transited the strategic waterway with support from US forces since early May.
The command said US forces remain prepared to take further action if required. It accused Iran of carrying out attacks against civilian shipping in the region.
The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most important energy corridors, handling a significant share of global oil shipments.
Meanwhile, the US Department of State issued a worldwide security caution for American citizens due to rising tensions in the Middle East.
The department advised US citizens in the region to remain vigilant, monitor official security alerts, and prepare for possible flight cancellations, airspace closures, and travel disruptions.
It also warned that US diplomatic missions and American interests, including those outside the Middle East, could face potential threats from Iran or groups aligned with Tehran.
