- Lok Sabha schedules Vande Mataram anniversary debate with key leaders
- Parliament to hold wide discussion on 150th year of Vande Mataram
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will initiate the debate on the 150th anniversary of Vande Mataram in the Lok Sabha on Monday. The House has listed the discussion under the title “Discussion on the 150th anniversary of national song Vande Mataram” and has set aside 10 hours for the session. The focus keyword Vande Mataram Debate has drawn attention as the event is part of year long national celebrations.
The Lok Sabha debate will include several senior leaders. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is expected to be the second speaker. Congress deputy leader in the Lok Sabha Gaurav Gogoi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra will also take part. The session is likely to highlight the history of the poem written by Bankim Chandra Chatterjee and set to tune by Jadunath Bhattacharya. Many members expect that the long discussion will give new insights into the national song and its journey over the past 150 years.
Meanwhile, the Prime Minister had earlier accused the Congress of removing key stanzas from the song in 1937. He said the move sowed the seeds of partition. On November 7, Modi launched year long celebrations to mark the 150th year of Vande Mataram. The plan aims to build awareness among youth and students about the importance of the song. The Vande Mataram Debate in Parliament is seen as a major part of this wider effort.
Officials said, “Many important and unknown facets related to Vande Mataram will come out in front of the nation during the debate.” Later, Home Minister Amit Shah will initiate the discussion in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday. Health Minister and Leader of the Rajya Sabha J P Nadda will speak after him.
The House will also take up a debate on election reforms on Tuesday and Wednesday. Members will discuss matters linked to the Special Intensive Revision of the electoral rolls. Rajya Sabha will take up the same subject on Wednesday and Thursday. The first two days of the Winter Session saw disruptions due to opposition protests on the SIR. Repeated adjournments marked the beginning of the session. The Monsoon Session had also faced similar disruptions due to the demand for a debate on the SIR in Bihar.
