- High Court orders status quo in Khammam Velugumatla case
- Victims seek houses as demolitions spark political uproar
Hyderabad: Velugumatla Bhoodan lands case saw a major development as the Telangana High Court ordered status quo to be maintained. The court issued key directions in the ongoing dispute related to lands in Khammam district. The order comes amid rising concerns over demolitions and land ownership issues.
The High Court clearly directed authorities to maintain the current situation on the Bhoodan lands. It asked the Khammam District Collector, RDO, and Tahsildar to ensure that no changes take place. Meanwhile, the court also responded to pleas from victims who lost their homes in the area.
Victims urged the court to identify original beneficiaries and provide houses and plots on the Bhoodan lands. Responding to this, the High Court ordered that houses should be given not only to 311 people but to all those who lost their homes there. Therefore, the scope of relief has been widened beyond earlier numbers.
However, the issue has remained contentious for some time. In February 2026, authorities moved ahead with removal of encroachments despite earlier status quo directions. During that drive, houses on about 31 acres of land were demolished. Officials stated that exemptions were given to ten families who had secured court orders.
Also, the land dispute involves Bhoodan lands that were allotted to more than 800 poor families in 2014. The government later considered these allotments illegal and initiated action in February 2026. This move has triggered strong political reactions and public concern.
Officials further said that around 21 acres out of 31.07 acres were identified as encroached land. They stated that the land was being taken for a Gurukul school and KGBVs. Meanwhile, the developments in Velugumatla village, Vinoba Navodaya Colony in Khammam Rural Mandal, continue to draw attention.
Later, the High Court took up the matter again and reiterated that status quo must continue. Therefore, the latest order aims to halt further action until the dispute is resolved. The case remains under close watch as affected families await relief.
