VIDEO | Owaisi Warns Against Waqf Bill, Says it Creates Social Instability

AIMIM Chief Asaduddin Owaisi on Monday issued a warning to the government regarding the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024, urging it to reconsider the bill in its current form. Owaisi expressed that if the bill is passed as is, it would lead to social instability across the country. He stated that the entire Muslim community has rejected the bill and also emphasized how it’ll be violating several constitutional laws.

Violation of Laws

During his address in the Lok Sabha, Owaisi raised concerns about the bill’s violation of Articles 25, 26, and 14 of the Indian Constitution, which guarantees religious freedom, the right to manage religious affairs, and equality before the law. He warned that the law if enacted, could severely disrupt the social stability of India. “If you bring and make a Waqf law in the present form, it will lead to social instability,” Owaisi declared. He further added that the Muslim community would not stand for any loss of their religious properties, asserting that “no Waqf property will be left, nothing will be left.”

Owaisi also expressed his concerns about the government’s broader vision for the country. He stated, “You want to make India ‘Viksit Bharat’, we wantViksit Bharat‘.” However, he accused the government of trying to take the country back to the political climate of the 1980s and early 1990s, placing the responsibility for any ensuing instability squarely on the ruling party.

The AIMIM Chief stated “As a proud Indian Muslim, I will not lose an inch of my Masjid…I will not lose an inch of my Dargah. I will not allow that. We will no longer come and give diplomatic talks over here. This is the House where I have to stand and speak honestly, that my community – we are proud Indians. It is my property, not given by anyone. You cannot snatch it away from me. Waqf is a form of worship for me.” Owaisi’s words highlight the sentiment that Waqf properties are not just assets but important places of worship and cultural identity for Muslims in India.

MP Kalyan Raises Concern

Earlier in the day, opposition MPs Kalyan Banerjee from the Lok Sabha and Md. Nadimul Haque from the Rajya Sabha raised serious concerns over the handling of their dissent notes on the Waqf (Amendment) Bill. The MPs accused the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) of deleting key portions of their objections without prior notice or explanation. The removal of these sections from their dissent notes, they claimed, was done without their consent, raising doubts about the transparency of the legislative process.

In a letter addressed to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, the opposition MPs expressed their dismay and surprise over the unexplained deletions. “To our dismay and utter surprise, we found that the following objectives and dissent notes have been deleted by the Chairman without informing us and without our consent,” the MPs wrote in their letter dated February 3, 2025.

The Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024, is proving to be a highly controversial issue, with concerns raised over its potential impact on the legal and social rights of the Muslim community in India. As the bill moves through Parliament, it is expected to spark further debates and protests from various quarters, particularly in relation to religious freedom, property rights, and the role of the state in regulating religious institutions.
