Hanoi, July 12: Vietnam’s top leaders expressed condolences after a tourist boat accident killed 15 Indian nationals and injured others.
President To Lam and Prime Minister Le Minh Hung sent condolence messages to President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. They said Vietnam is carrying out search and rescue and ensuring medical care for the injured. The leaders added authorities are coordinating with Indian officials on the response.
Vietnam’s foreign minister Le Hoai Trung also conveyed condolences to External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar. Local officials said two Indians remain in critical condition and 19 people are safe. Authorities said teams are verifying identities and investigating the cause of the capsizing.
The Phu Quoc Special Zone chairman said the boat owner agreed to pay US$1,000 to each bereaved family and US$500 to each injured passenger. He added provincial authorities will provide roughly VNĐ26 million, about US$1,000, per death. Officials said they will assist repatriation or follow relatives’ wishes for alternative arrangements.
