Water Board Plans Daily Drinking Water For Every Home
Hyderabad: The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board has announced plans to supply drinking water to every household every day by the end of 2027.
The Water Board currently supplies water drawn from the Krishna, Godavari, Singur, and Manjeera rivers. Meanwhile, it has accelerated work on the Godavari Drinking Water Supply Scheme Phase 2 and Phase 3 to meet future demand. Officials said Hyderabad’s water requirement may rise to 835 MGD by 2027 and 1,114 MGD by 2047. Therefore, the board is working to secure an additional 20 TMC of water.
At present, Godavari Phase 2 and 3 are designed with a total availability of 30 TMC. The projects, costing Rs 7,360 crore, include master balancing reservoirs and water treatment plants. In addition, the board has begun filling twin reservoirs with Godavari water to support the Musi river rejuvenation effort.
Water Board plans daily drinking water with long term master plan
Meanwhile, the Water Board has also prioritised sewage treatment to protect lakes and the Musi river. It has started construction of 39 sewage treatment plants within the Outer Ring Road. These plants will have a combined capacity of 972 MLD. The works, costing Rs 3,849.10 crore under Amrit 2.0, are scheduled for completion by 2026. Once completed, total sewage treatment capacity will reach 2,850 MLD, meeting demand until 2036.
In addition, a detailed project report worth Rs 4,700 crore has been prepared to lay trunk lines preventing sewage inflow into the Musi. A master plan is also underway to ensure full sewage treatment beyond the Outer Ring Road by 2036.
The board has also taken measures to prevent water shortages during summer. Although groundwater levels fell sharply last year, heavy rainfall and the Inkudu Gunthala Yagna improved levels by up to 11 metres. As a result, notices were issued to 16,000 households to build recharge pits, with 25,000 more planned by March.
Officials said new reservoirs, pipelines, and projects, including Kokapet Neopolis, will support equal and sustainable 24 hour water supply across Hyderabad.
