Will Maharashtra Govt Act Against ATS Officials After 2006 Blast Accused Are Acquitted?: Asaduddin Owaisi

Hyderabad, July 22 (Maxim News): In the wake of the Bombay High Court acquitting 12 men in the 2006 Mumbai train blasts case, AIMIM President and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi has questioned whether the Maharashtra government will take action against the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) officers who investigated the case.

Taking to social media platform X, Owaisi expressed outrage over the fact that 12 Muslim men spent 18 years in prison for a crime they did not commit. “They lost their prime years behind bars, while over 180 families still wait for real justice,” he said. “Will the Maharashtra government now act against the ATS officers responsible for this flawed investigation?”

Owaisi stressed the lifelong damage inflicted on the acquitted men, highlighting that they had no opportunity to rebuild their lives after nearly two decades in jail. “They were imprisoned for 17 years straight—never released even for a single day. Most of their productive life is gone,” he wrote.

A Shocking Turn in a High-Profile Case

The 2006 Mumbai suburban train blasts—considered one of the deadliest terror attacks in the country—killed 189 people and injured more than 800. In 2015, a special trial court convicted 12 men, sentencing five to death and the remaining seven to life imprisonment.

However, in a stunning reversal, the Bombay High Court on Monday acquitted all 12, citing lack of credible evidence and inconsistencies in the prosecution’s case.

The verdict has reignited debates on wrongful arrests, communal profiling, and accountability of investigating agencies in terror-related cases. Owaisi’s remarks reflect a growing chorus demanding a review of investigative standards and justice for the wrongfully incarcerated.

As the spotlight now shifts to the Maharashtra government, questions are being raised about whether disciplinary or legal action will be taken against ATS officers involved in what is now seen as a major miscarriage of justice.
