World leaders pays homage to Mahatma Gandhi at Raj Ghat
New Delhi: On the second day of the G20 summit, world leaders gathered at Rajghat in the midst of a gentle drizzle to pay their respects to Mahatma Gandhi. Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended a warm welcome to the dignitaries, presenting them with handwoven khadi shawls as a gesture of goodwill.
US President Joe Biden and Premier of the People’s Republic of China, Li Qiang, were among those who visited Rajghat to pay homage to Mahatma Gandhi, offering wreaths in his memory.
Other prominent world leaders, including UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, President of South Korea Yoon Suk Yeol, and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, also arrived at Rajghat to honor Mahatma Gandhi.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed additional leaders, including his Canadian counterpart Justin Trudeau, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, Spain’s Vice-President Nadia Calvino Santamaria, Egypt President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, Netherlands Prime Minister Mark Rutte, PM of Mauritius Pravind Kumar Jugnauth, Deputy Prime Minister of Oman Asaad bin Tariq bin Taimur Al Said, Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, UN Secretary-General António Guterres, World Bank President Ajay Banga, and DG World Health Organization (WHO) Tedros Adhanom, at Rajghat. Each leader paid their respects to Mahatma Gandhi by laying wreaths at his memorial.
The Rajghat was adorned with vibrant flowers in honor of the visiting dignitaries, all of whom were surrounded by tight security arrangements.
