TSDCA Cracks Down On Pharmacies For Selling Drugs With Misleading Ads

Hyderabad, April 28 (Maxim News): The drug inspectors of Telangana State Drug Control Administration (TSDCA) have seized stocks of 8 Ayurvedic medicines and one Allopathic formulation for making misleading claims of treating various medical conditions through advertisements.

The 8 seized ayurvedic medicines include Khadirarishta claimed to treat tumors, ekangveer Ras claiming to treat paralysis, Simhadi guggulu claimed to treat Rheumatism and ‘tumors’, Stonil 24 Tablets for treating kidney stones, Ayur Phala Neem Leaf Powder claiming to treat fever and Allopathic medicine Diclodan Forte Tablets (Diclofenac sodium and Paracetamol Tablets) that claimed to treat fever.

The TSDCA clarified that such claims are in contravention of the Drugs and Magic Remedies (Objectionable Advertisements) Act, 1954, which prohibits the advertisement of certain drugs for the treatment of certain diseases and disorders.

In another raid, the TSDCA seized overpriced antibiotic ointment ‘Mupimet Ointment 5 gm’ (Muprin Ointment IP2 percent) at Beeramguda, Ameenpur mandal Sangareddy district on Saturday.

The product Mupirocin Ointment (sold under the brand name ‘Mupima Ointment 5gm’) is under price control as per Drugs (Prices Control) Order, 2013 and the price of the product shall be per the ‘Ceiling Price’ fixed by the National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA), Government of India.

Marketed by Maathrey Pharmaceuticals, Keesar, medical-Malkajgiri district, the product has an MRP of Rs. 189 for 5 gm of the pack while the ceiling price of NPPA for 5 gm of the product is Rs. 101.45. The firm was overpricing the product by charging Rs. 75.40 excess, which is a violation of the Drugs (Prices Control) Order, 2013, a DCA press release said. (Maxim News)
