Hyderabad: The Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA) on Tuesday removed encroachments from the Full Tank Level (FTL) of Ramanthapur Pedda Cheruvu in Uppal Assembly constituency, reclaiming 2,180 square yards as part of the lake’s restoration project.
Officials said the drive was undertaken to restore the lake’s original boundaries and facilitate ongoing rejuvenation works.
2,180 Sq Yards Reclaimed
Ramanthapur Pedda Cheruvu has an FTL area of 30 acres, of which nearly 16 acres had been encroached upon over the years. Around 12 acres are occupied by permanent structures, which were not disturbed during the operation.
Instead, HYDRAA focused on clearing nearly four acres occupied by temporary sheds and huts.
During the drive, officials demolished an under-construction G+2 commercial building spread over 1,900 square yards and an auto garage occupying another 280 square yards.
2BHK Housing Recommended for Eligible Families
According to officials, many families living in the temporary settlements depend on waste collection and daily wage labour and have faced repeated flooding whenever the lake reached full capacity during the monsoon.
HYDRAA has recommended 2BHK housing for eligible families, and the Telangana government has initiated steps to prioritise their rehabilitation.
The reclaimed land will help expand the lake’s Full Tank Level under the ₹19-crore Ramanthapur Pedda Cheruvu restoration and development project, enabling bund strengthening, lake rejuvenation, and flood mitigation works.
