Kerala: PM Modi to Visit Landslide-Hit Wayanad

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit Kerala’s Wayanad district on Saturday, August 10, to assess the situation in the landslide-affected areas and oversee the ongoing relief and rehabilitation efforts. During his visit, he will meet with victims at hospitals and relief camps, ensuring that proper support is provided to those impacted by the tragedy.

Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, a former MP of Wayanad, expressed his gratitude to PM Modi for deciding to visit the region following the devastating landslides. Gandhi also voiced his hope that the Prime Minister will declare the Wayanad landslides a “national disaster” after witnessing the extent of the destruction.

Thank you, Modi ji, for visiting Wayanad to personally take stock of the terrible tragedy. This is a good decision. I am confident that once the Prime Minister sees the extent of the devastation firsthand, he will declare it a national disaster,” Gandhi posted on X on Friday night.

PM Modi’s Visit to Wayanad: Full Schedule

Prime Minister Modi is expected to arrive in Kerala’s Kannur around 11:00 AM on Saturday, August 10. From there, he will conduct an aerial survey of the landslide-affected areas in Wayanad.

Following the aerial survey, he is scheduled to visit the ground locations impacted by the landslides at approximately 12:15 PM, where he will receive a briefing from rescue teams on the ongoing evacuation operations.

The Prime Minister will then visit a relief camp and hospital where survivors of the landslides are receiving care. He will interact with those affected, listening to their concerns and grievances.

Modi will conclude his visit by chairing a review meeting, where he will be thoroughly briefed on the incident and the ongoing relief efforts, according to an official release.

Kerala CM Confirms PM Modi’s Visit

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan announced PM Modi’s visit to Wayanad earlier this week during a press conference. The Chief Minister expressed hope that the central government would declare the Wayanad landslides as a national disaster and a severe calamity.

Massive landslides struck Chooralmala and Mundakkai in Wayanad on July 30, causing widespread devastation. The landslides claimed over 400 lives, with 150 people still missing. The final death toll will be confirmed following DNA analysis of the recovered bodies, according to the CM.
