Bharat Bandh Today!? Here Is All You Need To Know

The Reservation Bachao Sangharsh Samiti has called for a Bharat Bandh on August 21, 2024, in response to the Supreme Court’s recent ruling on SC/ST reservations. The bandh, which has gained support from SC/ST groups in Rajasthan, is expected to see widespread participation. Authorities have been instructed to take measures to maintain law and order during the protest.

Bharat Bandh Reason:

The Supreme Court’s decision to allow states to create sub-categories within the SC and ST groups has sparked significant controversy. The ruling emphasized that those in need should receive priority in reservations. This decision has been met with opposition from various social and political organizations, which argue that it undermines the principles of reservation. The Bharat Bandh aims to challenge this ruling and demand its reversal.

Bharat Bandh: Authorities on High Alert

In anticipation of potential unrest, police authorities have increased their presence across districts. A high-level meeting was held through video conferencing, and attended by divisional commissioners, district magistrates, and senior police officers. Western Uttar Pradesh, identified as a sensitive area, has been placed on high alert. “We have asked our officials to organize meetings with groups calling for the bandh, as well as with market associations, to facilitate better cooperation,” said DGP UR Sahoo.

Bharat Bandh: What’s closed, what’s open?

The group organizing the protest has urged all business organizations to keep markets closed, as per a TOI report. However, it remains unclear if markets will shut down or if the shutdown will affect the entire country as there is no confirmation from market committees.

While the bandh is expected to disrupt public transport and private offices, emergency services, including ambulances, will remain operational. As per media reports, government offices, banks, schools, colleges, and petrol pumps will be functional despite the call for Bharat Bandh. In addition, emergency services such as medical, drinking water, public transport, rail services, and electricity services will remain open.
