Conserving Urban Biodiversity Is Everyone’s Responsibility: GHMC Mayor

Hyderabad, Nov 29 (Maxim News) Mayor Gadwal Vijayalakshmi said that it is everyone’s responsibility to preserve the urban bio-medicine. She said that there is a need to create more social awareness of the importance of biodiversity in urban areas, protecting and preserving biodiversity.

Mayor Gadwal Vijayalakshmi was the chief guest at the inaugural program held at Taj Vivanta Hotel in Begumpet on Friday as part of the two-day National Conference on Urban Biodiversity under the joint auspices of National Biodiversity Authority and ICLEI. In this conference, the conservation and preservation of biodiversity in urban areas, its importance, discussion of how biodiversity is affected by development and urbanization, discussion on measures to be taken to preserve urban biodiversity and awareness of various aspects related to biodiversity were discussed.

Speaking on this occasion, the Mayor said that urban biodiversity is very important in healthy cities and sustainable urban development. Climate change will affect everything from air and water quality to the overall resilience of urban ecosystems. Biodiversity is useful for making the urban system stronger. According to the World Economic Forum, cities account for more than 80 percent of global GDP. But at the same time, three-quarters of the greenhouse gas emissions are coming especially from centers like Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru, according to the WWEF report, economic activities worth around 30 lakh crore rupees are estimated to be at risk due to lack of biodiversity.

The Mayor said that Hyderabad city has been recognized for urban biodiversity conservation. She said that Hyderabad will be a model for other cities by implementing plans to create diverse ecosystems, increase greenery, and connect with nature. Considerable progress has been made in protecting and enhancing biodiversity. She said that steps have been taken to increase green spaces, protect natural habitats, establish bio corridors, conserve water bodies, and develop extensive flower gardens and green areas under the Urban Biodiversity (UBD Department).

She said that Hyderabad city has received international recognition through the UNEP Green Cities Program and International Urban Parks Awards. He said that the Telangana Biodiversity Board plays a vital role in ensuring ecological balance in partnership with organizations like the National Biodiversity Authority and ICLEI. She said that Hyderabad city is at the forefront of biodiversity conservation and is taking it further with the participation of people and practical plans.

HMDA Commissioner Sarparaj Ahmed said that it is necessary to take biodiversity as an integral part of the urban development plan. The role of urban governing bodies is crucial in promoting greenness and nature-based solutions. She said that more progress can be made in biodiversity conservation by providing coordination between multiple departments.

National Biodiversity Authority Chairperson C. Achalender Reddy said that the Government of India is making special plans to restore biodiversity. He said that the National Biodiversity Authority’s policies and objectives are aimed at reconciling urban ecosystems in the country. He said that the development of bio corridors in Hyderabad city is a guide for other cities. It is suggested to bring large-scale changes in biodiversity conservation with collective programs.

At this conference, Ministry of Environment Forest and Climate Change Advisor Raghu Kumar Kodali, National Biodiversity Authority Secretary Dr. B. Balaji, Dr. Biksham Gujja, Dr. G. Chandrasekhar Reddy, Harish Chandra Prasad Yarlagadda, ICLEI Associate Director Dr. Monalisa Sen, Dr. Sairam Reddy Palicherla, Sanjeev Karpe, Mayor Nayan Ben Pedadia, Mayor of Rose Kot Municipal Corporation, Mayors of various Corporations, Municipal Commissioners, Forest Department officials, other senior officials, scientists, NGOs and others participated.
