Ex- Congress MP Sajjan Kumar Gets Life Imprisonment In 1984 Anti-Sikh Riots Case
On Tuesday, a Delhi court sentenced former Congress MP Sajjan Kumar to life imprisonment in connection with a murder case tied to the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. Special Judge Kaveri Baweja delivered the verdict for the killing of Jaswant Singh and his son, Tarundeep Singh, which occurred on November 1, 1984, during the violent riots.
Details of the Case and Court Proceedings
The complainant, who is the wife of Jaswant Singh, along with the prosecution, had sought the death penalty for Kumar. The court had previously convicted Kumar on February 12 for the crime and sought a psychiatric and psychological evaluation of the convict, as required by a Supreme Court order for cases involving capital punishment. This report was requested from Tihar Central Jail, where Kumar is currently imprisoned.
While the murder charge carries the possibility of the death penalty, the court ultimately decided on life imprisonment as the punishment. The case had initially been registered by the Punjabi Bagh Police Station, but a special investigation team later took over the investigation.

The prosecution alleged that, in the aftermath of the assassination of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, a massive mob, armed with weapons, carried out large-scale violence against Sikhs. This included looting, arson, and the destruction of Sikh properties. The mob attacked the home of the complainant, killing both Jaswant and Tarundeep Singh. In addition to the murders, the attackers looted their belongings and set the house on fire.
