Khairatabad Bypol | Hyderabad, Sept. 29: The political landscape in Hyderabad has changed significantly since the 2023 Telangana Assembly elections, with the Congress winning two seats in the city through bypolls and now eyeing a possible third in Khairatabad.
The Congress came to power in Telangana after the 2023 Assembly elections.
However, its performance in Greater Hyderabad was limited, with the party failing to win an Assembly seat in the city in the general election.
The BRS retained most of the non-Old City seats, while the AIMIM continued to hold its traditional strongholds in the Old City. The BJP also retained a presence in the city through Goshamahal.
The political picture began changing with a series of bypolls.
Congress Opens Account Through Two Bypolls
The first major change came in Secunderabad Cantonment after BRS MLA G. Lasya Nanditha died in a road accident in February 2024.
Congress candidate Sri Ganesh won the subsequent bypoll, giving the party its first Assembly seat in Greater Hyderabad during the current electoral cycle.
The second shift came in Jubilee Hills after the death of sitting BRS MLA Maganti Gopinath in June 2025.
Congress candidate V. Naveen Yadav won the November 2025 bypoll, taking the party’s Hyderabad Assembly tally to two.
Now, Khairatabad has become the focus.
The Telangana High Court disqualified Danam Nagender from the Assembly over his defection from the BRS to the Congress. The Supreme Court subsequently upheld the disqualification, while the Assembly seat was declared vacant.
The vacancy has paved the way for another bypoll in Greater Hyderabad. Nagender had originally won Khairatabad as a BRS candidate in the 2023 Assembly election before joining the Congress in 2024.
Nagender has expressed confidence about contesting the upcoming bypoll, although he has not publicly confirmed which party will field him.
Khairatabad Bypoll | Congress Looks to Expand Hyderabad Footprint
A Congress victory in Khairatabad would take the party’s Assembly tally in Greater Hyderabad to three seats since the 2023 election.
The developments have also increased attention on the party’s preparations for the next Greater Hyderabad civic elections.
Congress leaders are seeking to consolidate the gains made through the Secunderabad Cantonment and Jubilee Hills bypolls while expanding the party’s organisational presence across the city.
The BRS, meanwhile, continues to hold several Assembly constituencies in Greater Hyderabad, while the AIMIM retains its strong presence in the Old City and the BJP remains a major political force in parts of the city.
The Khairatabad bypoll is therefore likely to become another important contest in Hyderabad, with the Election Commission yet to announce the election schedule.
The outcome will determine whether Congress can add another Assembly seat to its growing tally in the city.
