New Delhi, Sept. 29: Neeru Dhanda made history at the Asian Games 2026 in Aichi-Nagoya on Tuesday, winning gold in the women’s individual trap event.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the 26-year-old shooter after her landmark victory.
Dhanda finished the final with 28 hits to become the first Indian woman to win an individual Asian Games gold in trap shooting.
Her score also set a new Asian Games record. China’s Sun Yunong won silver with 26 hits, while Kuwait’s Hajar Abdulmalik took bronze with 21.
“Neeru Dhanda has given India a historic moment to celebrate!” Modi wrote on X.
He praised her accuracy and composure and said her achievement could encourage more young sportspersons to take up shooting.
Dhanda had entered the final after topping the qualification round with 118 hits.
She then maintained her composure during the decisive stages to secure the gold despite challenging conditions.

Earlier, Dhanda joined Aashima Ahlawat and Manisha Keer to win silver in the women’s trap team event.
The Indian trio recorded a combined score of 328 in the 125-shot qualification round.
China won gold with 346, while Kuwait secured bronze with 325 at the Aichi Prefecture General Shooting Gallery.
Dhanda was India’s top performer in the team event, scoring 118 out of 125. Aashima scored 106, while Manisha contributed 104.
Modi also congratulated all three shooters for their team silver. He described their performance as a display of precision, focus and teamwork.
The individual gold adds to Dhanda’s breakthrough year in international shooting.
She had earlier become the first Indian woman to win an individual ISSF World Cup gold in women’s trap at Lonato, Italy.
Her Asian Games triumph marks another major milestone for Indian shooting at the Aichi-Nagoya Games.
