New Delhi, Sept. 29: Former India pacer Mohit Sharma is set to return to Chennai Super Kings (CSK) as the franchise’s bowling coach for IPL 2027.
The 38-year-old will replace Eric Simons in the role as newly appointed head coach Zaheer Khan reshapes CSK’s support staff ahead of the new season. CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan confirmed that Zaheer recommended Mohit for the position.
Mohit’s appointment will mark a return to the franchise where he previously spent four seasons as a player. He made 48 IPL appearances for CSK and was part of the team during a successful phase in its history.
He also represented CSK in 10 matches across two seasons of the now-defunct Champions League T20.
Mohit Returns as CSK Begin New Coaching Phase
Mohit played for India in eight T20Is and was also part of the country’s 2015 World Cup squad. He last featured in the IPL during the 2025 season before retiring from all forms of cricket in December 2025.
His return comes as CSK begin a major change in their coaching setup. Zaheer Khan took over as head coach after the franchise and long-serving coach Stephen Fleming parted ways following three consecutive seasons without a playoff appearance.
Zaheer has been given responsibility for assembling his support staff. Mohit is understood to be the first major addition to the new coaching team.
The franchise is expected to announce further support staff appointments in the coming weeks. Reports indicate that the batting coach position is also under consideration, while assistant coaches Sridharan Sriram and Rajiv Kumar are expected to continue.
CSK last won the IPL title in 2023, securing their fifth championship. The franchise will now enter IPL 2027 with a revamped coaching structure under Zaheer and the return of a former CSK player to the support staff.
