Hyderabad Water Bill Scam Alert: Fake Messages Stealing Personal Data

Hyderabad Water Bill Scam | Hyderabad, May 31 (Maxim News): Cybercriminals have found a new way to scam residents of Hyderabad by posing as the Hyderabad Water Board and sending fake bill payment alerts.

Fraudsters are sending alarming messages claiming, “Your water connection will be disconnected if you don’t pay your bill.” These messages often contain suspicious links or APK files. Once users download the file, malware is installed on their phones, stealing sensitive data such as bank details, UPI PINs, and other personal information.

The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) has issued an official warning stating that it does not send such messages. Officials urge the public to avoid clicking on unknown links and never download APK files from unofficial sources.

The Board said it found users receiving messages from unidentified mobile numbers claiming to be official senders and advising them to pay dues by 9.30 p.m., failing which their water connections will be cut. Such messages further direct recipients to contact another number for assistance. Upon contacting, the users are sent an APK file via WhatsApp.

“These are unauthorized and misleading messages. No such messages are being sent by HMWS&SB. All official communications from HMWS&SB are issued through authorised channels only. For any clarification or service-related queries, citizens are requested to contact the official HMWSSB helpline 155313,” it clarified.

To remain safe, pay water bills only via the official HMWSSB website or authorized mobile apps. Ignore and delete suspicious SMS or WhatsApp messages demanding urgent payments. Never install APK files sent through messages.

Report fake messages to the HMWSSB Customer Care immediately. Stay vigilant and protect your personal data from cyber fraud. (Maxim News)
