Huzurnagar/Suryapet, June 27, 2025 (Maxim News): Irrigation Capt. N. Uttam Kumar Reddy on Friday reaffirmed the Congress government’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding the state’s rightful share of Krishna and Godavari river waters, declaring that there will be “no compromise” on this crucial issue for the prosperity of farmers and the future of Telangana.
During an inspection of ongoing irrigation works on the Krishna River in Suryapet district, the Minister sharply criticized the previous BRS government for what he described as “criminal mismanagement” of water resources and financial irresponsibility. “The BRS regime has pushed Telangana’s irrigation sector into crisis and burdened the state with a staggering ₹16,000 crore annual interest on irrigation loans alone,” he said.
Congress to Fight for Telangana’s Water Rights at All Levels
Uttam Kumar Reddy stated that the Congress government would pursue all available avenues—including legal action and negotiations with the Centre—to ensure Telangana receives its fair share of river water allocations, based on catchment area, ayacut, and population.
He denounced the previous BRS government’s decision to restrict Telangana to just 299 TMC of Krishna water out of the total 811 TMC, allowing 512 TMC to Andhra Pradesh. Calling it a “historic betrayal”, he said this decision had permanently harmed Telangana’s irrigation prospects.
Kaleshwaram vs. Pranahitha-Chevella: A Costly Policy Mistake
The Minister also criticized the BRS for scrapping the proposed Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Pranahitha-Chevella project at Tummadihatti, originally estimated at ₹38,000 crore. Instead, he said, the BRS pursued the Kaleshwaram project at a cost of ₹1 lakh crore, which has now failed to deliver results.
“Had the original project been implemented, Telangana could have saved ₹62,000 crore—enough to complete other key irrigation projects like SLBC, Palamuru-Rangareddy, Bhima, Nettempadu, Devadula, Sitarama, and Gouravelli,” he said.
Congress Delivering Results: Record Paddy Production, Rythu Bharosa
Despite inheriting a flawed irrigation setup, Uttam Kumar Reddy highlighted that the Congress government has enabled record agricultural output, with 281 lakh metric tonnes of paddy produced across Kharif and Rabi seasons—the highest in the country.
This, he said, was made possible through direct support to farmers under the Rythu Bharosa scheme, which credited ₹9,000 crore into farmers’ accounts in just nine days.
Warning to Contractors, Push for Timely Completion of Projects
Inspecting the Jawahar Jan Pahad Lift Irrigation Scheme, the Minister expressed dissatisfaction with the slow pace of work. He warned the contracting agency to accelerate progress immediately, advising that any design issues be resolved through the Central Design Organisation (CDO).
Focus on Nalgonda District and Beyond
Uttam Kumar Reddy affirmed that one of the Congress government’s top priorities is to fully utilize Krishna River water in the combined Nalgonda district, ensuring assured and timely irrigation for farmers.
“Telangana’s farmers deserve nothing less than reliable water access. The Congress government is fully committed to delivering on that promise,” he concluded.
