Hyderabad, July 6 (Maxim News): A massive deforestation drive at the Agriculture University in Rajendranagar has triggered strong protests from students and environmental activists after trees spread across 20 acres were razed overnight on Saturday.
According to reports, government agencies, backed by police protection, used JCB machines to uproot hundreds of fully grown trees late in the night, prompting allegations of environmental destruction and suppression of dissent. The operation began around midnight, with authorities allegedly locking hostel gates to prevent students from stepping out and opposing the activity.
Students expressed deep concern and anger over what they called a “blatant assault on the ecosystem.” Many took to social media and gathered within campus premises early Sunday morning, demanding accountability and an immediate halt to any further clearing.
“Instead of preserving green lungs, the government seems bent on destroying them in the name of development. This is not just tree cutting — it’s ecological vandalism,” said one protesting student.
Environmental activists have also raised questions over the lack of transparency and public consultation surrounding the operation. Several questioned whether proper environmental clearances had been obtained, and if an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) was conducted before initiating such large-scale deforestation.
Sources suggest the land may be repurposed for infrastructure or urban development, although no official confirmation has been made by the authorities as of yet.
Growing Tensions Over Urban Green Cover
The incident adds to a growing list of controversial green cover reductions across Hyderabad, where urban expansion projects have frequently come under fire for neglecting environmental safeguards.
The student protest is expected to intensify in the coming days, with calls for an independent probe, and appeals to Chief Minister Revanth Reddy and environmental authorities to intervene immediately.
Several environmental groups have pledged support to the students and are preparing to file petitions demanding a moratorium on further tree felling until legal compliance is verified.
