New Delhi/Hyderabad, July 8, 2025 (Maxim News): Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s birthday wishes to Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama on the occasion of his 90th birthday have triggered diplomatic tensions with China, prompting a formal protest from Beijing.
The Dalai Lama celebrated his milestone birthday on Sunday in McLeodganj, Himachal Pradesh, with global leaders and followers sharing their wishes. PM Modi took to social media to convey his greetings, stating, “Warm birthday wishes to His Holiness the Dalai Lama. May he be blessed with a long and healthy life.”
However, China reacted strongly, issuing an official diplomatic protest. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said India should “fully understand the sensitive nature of the Xizang (Tibet) issue,” accusing the Dalai Lama of being a “separatist” and reiterating Beijing’s longstanding objection to India’s public recognition of the Tibetan leader.
“We strongly oppose any country using the Tibet issue to interfere in China’s internal affairs. The Dalai Lama is not a purely religious figure but a political exile engaged in anti-China activities,” Mao stated during a press briefing.
This is the third diplomatic protest from China over the Tibet issue in the past four days, following remarks made by the Dalai Lama reaffirming that the next reincarnation would follow traditional Tibetan practices, without interference from the Chinese government.
In response, India defended its position, pointing out that wishing the Dalai Lama on his birthday has been a regular practice for years and should not be viewed through a political lens.
“The Dalai Lama is a revered spiritual figure, and extending greetings on his birthday is a humanitarian gesture, not a political statement,” Indian officials clarified.
Tensions over the Tibet issue continue to add friction to already strained India-China relations, particularly in the context of border disputes and regional strategic competition.
