Hyderabad Toddy Tragedy: Two Dead, 28 Hospitalised After Suspected Adulteration
Hyderabad, July 10, 2025: A suspected case of spurious toddy consumption has led to the death of two individuals and the hospitalisation of 28 others in various parts of Hyderabad, triggering a serious public health concern and an investigation by the excise and police departments.
The deceased have been identified as Seetharam (43) and Swarupa (63). Both were admitted to Gandhi Hospital after experiencing severe diarrhoea, dehydration, and kidney failure shortly after consuming toddy on July 8. While Seetharam succumbed soon after admission, Swarupa passed away despite receiving treatment, Cyberabad Police Commissioner Avinash Mohanty said.
Adulterated Toddy Suspected
“Initial findings suggest this could be a case of adulterated or contaminated toddy. We are awaiting postmortem and chemical analysis reports to determine the exact cause of death,” Commissioner Mohanty told media outlets.
Hospitalisations and Areas Affected
According to the Prohibition and Excise Department, 28 individuals, including 12 women, have been admitted to NIMS Hospital, Punjagutta, with similar symptoms. Most of the affected consumed toddy from shops in Hayathnagar, Kukatpally, and Indiranagar.
The department noted a surge in hospitalisations from 15 on Tuesday night to 28 by Wednesday morning, indicating a possible wide-scale adulteration. Officials have appealed to the public to seek immediate medical attention if they experience symptoms after consuming toddy.
Investigation Underway
Minister for Prohibition and Excise, Jupally Krishna Rao, visited the victims undergoing treatment and assured strict action
“Samples have been collected from suspected toddy outlets and will be sent for chemical analysis. Based on the results, we will take stern action against those involved in the illegal adulteration,” the minister stated.
Five individuals are currently being questioned in connection with the incident, and a full-scale investigation is underway.
Public Safety Advisory
Authorities have urged citizens to avoid consuming toddy from unverified sources until safety is ensured. Shops suspected of selling contaminated toddy are being closely monitored.
