Hyderabad Weather: Sudden Showers Catches City Off Guard

Hyderabad, July 30, 2025 (Maxim News): Following several days of dry and muggy weather, Hyderabad had an unexpected downpour on Wednesday night, which caused disruptions to daily routines and evening commutes in several sections of the city. Many locals were caught off guard by the unexpected showers, which ranged in intensity from light to moderate, particularly in places that hadn’t seen any rain since the start of the week.

Around 5:20 p.m., the Sangareddy belt began to show the first indications of the weather shift as dark, rain-soaked clouds quickly rushed towards West Hyderabad. The downpour brought both much-needed respite and traffic havoc to numerous important regions within an hour.

Many commuters were left without umbrellas or rain gear as the sunny sky gave way to heavy rainfall in areas like Parade Ground, Paradise, Marredpally, Kukatpally, and KPHB. As the roads became slick and visibility diminished, people rushed to seek cover behind shopfronts, bus stops, and Metro Rail pillars.

By 5:30 p.m., when the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an advisory, rain had already started to fall in a number of the city’s areas. The IMD predicted light to moderate rainfall in the central, northern, and eastern parts of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) area, noting that the cloud mass had started in the west and was heading eastward.

The Telangana State Development Planning Society (TSDPS), which had recorded no rainfall activity until 5 p.m., updated its data as rain gauges across the city began registering showers. The highest rainfall was recorded in Hydernagar at 12.3 mm by 6 p.m., followed by:

  • Bowenpally – 10.3 mm
  • Kukatpally – 9.8 mm
  • Chanda Nagar – 9.8 mm
  • Moosapet – 9.5 mm
  • Safilguda – 9.3 mm
  • Quthbullapur – 7.5 mm
  • Serilingampally – 7.5 mm
  • Kapra – 6.5 mm
  • Anandbagh – 6.3 mm

Similar rainfall was also observed in nearby Medchal district areas, demonstrating the passing system’s vast reach.

Similar light to moderate rain spells are expected throughout the early evening hours of the upcoming days, especially over the western, northern, and central areas of the city, thus inhabitants have been urged by weather experts to be ready.

Although the short showers temporarily reduced the heat, the absence of timely notifications brought to light weaknesses in real-time communication and forecasting, a problem that would require immediate adjustment as monsoon activity increases.
