Banjara, Jubilee Hills Emerge as Hyderabad’s Gun Hubs
Hyderabad, Oct 23 (Maxim News): Hyderabad’s affluent neighbourhoods are under the spotlight as data points to a high concentration of licensed firearms in Banjara Hills and Jubilee Hills, even as the Jubilee Hills by-election approaches.
Public attention has shifted to the constituency with roadshows and rallies by major party candidates. Meanwhile, concern has grown over the rise of gun culture in city pockets that house many licence holders.
According to police records cited in the input, 3,709 individuals across the limits of 99 police stations in Hyderabad possess firearm licences. Of these, 906—about one-fourth—belong to Banjara Hills and Jubilee Hills areas. Pistols and revolvers form the bulk of the licensed weapons.
In Banjara Hills police station limits alone, there are 567 licence holders with 844 weapons, indicating multiple firearms in some hands. In Jubilee Hills, 234 persons hold licences, making both localities the epicentre of the city’s legal gun ownership.
With the by-election nearing, licensed weapon holders in these zones are required to deposit their firearms with police. Most have complied. However, the input notes that close to two dozen individuals have yet to deposit their weapons.
Authorities have stored, deposited firearms in 10 armouries across the city. These facilities include strong rooms with alarms and CCTV surveillance to ensure secure custody during the election period and to discourage misuse.
Senior police officials quoted in the input said there are no recent reports of licensed weapons being used for intimidation in Jubilee Hills, despite several retired police officers and former ministers residing there with licensed arms. Officials also explained that the annual renewal requirement for firearm licences has been extended, and the validity is now five years. Failure to renew results in cancellation, after which the weapon is liable to be seized by police under the rules.
The clustering of licences in Banjara Hills and Jubilee Hills reflects the city’s socioeconomic map, and it has drawn attention because of the current political heat in the bypoll-bound constituency. However, police have signalled tighter controls through mandatory deposits, monitored storage, and clear renewal protocols. Therefore, the election period will see continued checks, while residents with licences are being reminded to meet all compliance timelines and procedures. (Maxim News)
