SJ-100 Aircraft To Be Manufactured In India

  • HAL and Russia’s UAC sign deal to produce passenger aircraft
  • Joint production to boost India’s aviation and UDAN scheme

In a significant milestone for India’s aviation industry, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and Russia’s United Aircraft Corporation (PJSC-UAC) have signed an agreement to jointly manufacture the SJ-100 passenger aircraft in India. This marks the first time a passenger aircraft will be produced domestically under a joint India-Russia partnership.

The agreement was signed in Moscow in the presence of HAL Chairman D. K. Sunil and PJSC-UAC Director General Vadim Badekha. As per the deal, HAL will be responsible for manufacturing the SJ-100 — a small twin-engine passenger aircraft — to meet domestic aviation needs. The collaboration is expected to make a major impact on regional air connectivity and enhance India’s capabilities in civilian aircraft production.

According to an official statement from HAL, “The SJ-100 aircraft will be a game changer in the UDAN scheme launched to promote short-haul flights in the country.”

The company said the project aligns with the government’s vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat by ensuring that advanced passenger aircraft are produced within India using domestic resources and workforce.

HAL stated that under this agreement, it has received production rights to build SJ-100s for Indian carriers. The manufacturing is expected to stimulate both public and private investment in the aviation sector while generating significant direct and indirect employment opportunities.

Officials indicated that the step marks the beginning of a new chapter in India’s civil aviation journey and reinforces the growing India-Russia partnership in industrial innovation.

The SJ-100 is designed for regional routes, making it ideal for the government’s UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik) scheme aimed at improving connectivity to smaller towns and cities. HAL and UAC believe that local manufacturing will reduce dependency on imports while strengthening the indigenous aircraft ecosystem.
