Prime Minister Narendra Modi landed in Bhutan on Tuesday for a two-day visit coinciding with the 70th birthday celebrations of Bhutan’s fourth king, Jigme Singye Wangchuck. Modi was warmly received at Paro airport by Bhutan’s Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay, who welcomed him as an elder brother on X, reflecting the close ties between the two nations.
During the visit, Modi is scheduled to hold talks with King Jigme Khesar Namgyal Wangchuck and Prime Minister Tobgay. A significant highlight of the trip will be Modi and King Wangchuck jointly inaugurating the 1020 megawatt Punatsangchhu-II hydroelectric project. This project represents a key collaboration between India and Bhutan in the energy sector.
Prime Minister Modi will also attend celebrations marking the 70th birth anniversary of the former king. Ahead of the visit, Modi expressed confidence that the trip would deepen friendships and strengthen cooperative efforts toward shared progress and prosperity. He stated his honor in joining the Bhutanese people for the special occasion.
The India-Bhutan relationship remains a model of friendship and cooperation, grounded in trust and mutual understanding. Modi called this partnership a pillar of India’s Neighbourhood First Policy and a benchmark for friendly relations between neighboring countries. The Ministry of External Affairs said the visit aims to infuse fresh energy into bilateral relations.
The visit also coincides with the exposition of sacred Piprahwa relics of Lord Buddha sent from India to Bhutan, adding a spiritual dimension to the diplomatic engagements. This visit symbolizes both deep historical ties and forward-looking cooperation between the two countries.
