If You Block ‘SIR’, Bring It To Your Attention, We Will Issue An Order: Supreme Court

Delhi/Hyderabad, Dec 9 (Maxim News): The special revision of voter lists is ongoing in several states including West Bengal. The Supreme Court has taken a serious view of the threats being received by BLOs participating in this program. During the hearing of a case, the Supreme Court has directed the Election Commission to take serious note of the non-cooperation of state governments in the special intensive revision of electoral rolls. ‘If the situation worsens, there will be no other option but to deploy the police,’ the Supreme Court commented.

The Election Commission said that it has all the powers under the Constitution to resolve the issue of intimidation at the booth level and other officials. Responding to this, the Supreme Court said, ‘This should be resolved, otherwise these situations may lead to anarchy.

Meanwhile, the EC on Monday appointed five senior officers as Special Role Observers (SRO) to monitor the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voter list in Bengal. The EC said that this decision was taken to increase transparency in the process. Kumar Ravi Kant Singh, Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Defence, has been appointed as SRO for the Presidency Division. Neeraj Kumar Bansod of the Home Ministry has been given the responsibility of the Medinipur Division and Krishna Kumar Nirala of the Information and Broadcasting Ministry has been given the responsibility of the Burdwan Division. The Special Intensive Revision of the voter list began on November 4 and the final voter list will be announced on February 14 (Maxim News)
