Medak, May 21: A massive fire broke out on National Highway 44 near Tupran in Medak district after a container lorry carrying new cars caught fire on Thursday.
According to police, the container lorry was travelling from Maharashtra to Hyderabad when the fire suddenly erupted, triggering panic among commuters on the busy highway.
Officials said the container was transporting eight new Maruti Suzuki cars meant for sale. The flames spread rapidly and all eight vehicles were completely destroyed in the fire.
NH 44 Traffic Hit After Medak Highway Fire
Locals immediately alerted the police and fire services after noticing thick smoke and flames rising from the container lorry.
Fire brigade personnel rushed to the spot and brought the blaze under control after intensive efforts. Preliminary investigation suggests the fire may have started due to a technical fault or short circuit in the vehicle.
Authorities estimated that property worth crores of rupees was damaged in the incident.
The accident also caused major traffic disruption on NH 44 towards Hyderabad. Police temporarily halted vehicle movement as a precaution, resulting in long traffic jams on the highway.
However, the lorry driver and cleaner managed to escape safely before the flames intensified. No casualties were reported in the incident.
Police later cleared the damaged vehicle with the help of cranes and restored traffic movement. The Tupran Police registered a case and launched an investigation.
