Hyderabad: Credit card frauds have surged across the city, prompting the Cyber Crime Police to issue a strong public alert. The police explained that many residents are falling victim to phishing links, fake merchant websites, and calls from people who pretend to be bank officials. These methods, they said, make it easier for fraudsters to trick individuals into sharing crucial card details. The increase in such incidents has raised concern among officials who noted that the scams are becoming more polished and convincing.

Meanwhile, investigators pointed out that fraudsters are also cloning cards at compromised ATMs. They added that fake customer care numbers are being circulated across various platforms. According to officials, some scammers are even using malicious mobile applications designed to capture card data and OTPs. The police said SIM swapping has emerged as another major threat because it lets criminals intercept One Time Passwords that are needed to complete online transactions.

Authorities urged residents to avoid clicking on unknown links and to never share OTPs or card details with anyone. They reminded users that banks will never ask for OTPs, PINs, or CVVs over phone or email. Therefore, they stressed that any such request should be treated with immediate suspicion. The officers also asked people to download apps only from verified sources to avoid exposure to harmful software.

The Cybercrime Unit advised citizens to report any doubtful communication or transaction without delay. They stated that early reporting can reduce the damage and help prevent major financial loss. They added that using transaction alerts and staying cautious during online activity can help cardholders protect themselves from these emerging threats.
